ORLAN

(France)

ORLAN is one of the most internationally known French artists, being one of the great references of body art and what she called «carnal art». The artist works her body as the main medium and support of creation, making it an element of public debate and generator of new ideas. Her surgical interventions transmit with great clarity her commitment to a discourse based on a concept that prevails in all her work: freedom. ORLAN rejects any imposition of a natural or socially constructed nature, including politics and religion, as well as behaviours associated with supremacy such as machismo, racism or any other type of thoughts and attitudes that are born and result in discrimination.

ORLAN’s contribution to the Confinement Archive intelligently brings together the idea of emergency in the pandemic era and the need to protect ourselves and others. In her photographs, the artist wears a mask that imprints the ideas on which we must base our future. Her characteristic style always combines complex realities with humour, which always works as an effective way of transmitting her message and as an element promoting empathy. The artist also shares with us an interesting reflection that has emerged during this period of confinement.

FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE LOCKDOWN I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT MANDELA CONFINED IN A TINY LITTLE CELL FOR 28 YEARS.

IT IS ESSENTIAL NOT TO COMPLAIN, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO WRITE.

I’M WRITING MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY WHICH COULD NEVER HAVE BEEN WRITTEN WITHOUT THIS TRUCE… KNOWING THAT SOMETIMES WORDS SAVE AND SOMETIMES THEY KILL…
